Kydd Jones teams up with fellow born and raised Austinite Bomani Ray Barton for their Black History Month anthem James Baldwin.

Inspired by the illustrious author, Jones has released a clothing line for this song in collaboration with artist Will Bryant and print label Raw Paw. The proceeds from sales of the James Baldwin t-shirts will go to a relief fund for students and staff of Austin Learning Academy as they deal with the aftermath of historic winter storms in the area.

Austin Learning Academy has operated as an educational nonprofit organization in East Austin for over 25 years. For more information on how to help Austin Learning Academy, please contact Toni Davis at contact@austinlearningacademy.com

lyrics

Dark as James Baldwin
Mind state in a state of mine with no state of mine
Fuck all them
Crime pays why wait in line
Why wait in line
Why you stalling
They thought they knew me
Thought I knew myself
CDG hearts on my sleeve
And on my shelf
I hit Lil bih she starting tweaking
None was felt
My lil dog he say them streets made him
Something else
Where were you
When I needed help
I been running out of friends n
Needed something
Treat this like this was the end
The only only summer
I had to manifest my dreams
Where were you
When I did all myself?
Didn’t even have the strength
I did it all myself
Didn’t even need no friends
Did all myself
It was all me in the end
You gone always find your way and find yourself
I was way too lost in space to jot it down
People around the town they say his shot is gone
Hate to stir the pot and then reopen wounds
We open soon
More light
Enter the darkness to reopen wounds
In foresight
They want to off us
The more we bloom
In store fronts
We the targets
Another story soon
Another cloudy night
With a glory moon
Who knew I’d tour this soon
You know how tortoise move
I could afford the shoes
But yo the mortgage due!
